Steps to take

  1. Call your credit or debit card issuer promptly using the number on the card, statement, or official banking app. Explain whether the payment was unauthorized or you were tricked into authorizing it.
  2. Ask the issuer about blocking further charges, replacing the card if necessary, and the relevant dispute or refund process. Record the case number.
  3. Preserve transaction details, merchant correspondence, receipts, and screenshots. Follow the issuer’s deadlines and any instructions for written follow-up.
  4. Consider reporting suspected fraud to the FTC. A chargeback or refund is never guaranteed; credit and debit card protections can differ.

Information to prepare

  • Transaction date, amount and merchant name
  • Card issuer case number
  • Receipts and contact history
